Hillsdale, once a part of Washington Township, derived its name from its geography— a ‘dale’, or valley, among the hills. Hillsdale’s busting downtown is intersected by a train track, constructed in the spring of 1869, that now carries commuters through Bergen County and eventually into New York City. The town’s population, as of the 2010 Census, is just over 10,000 people. Hillsdale is known throughout the area for the popular Stony Brook Swim Club, a desirable escape from the summertime heat that is right in residents’ backyards. The town also offers a wide variety of recreational activities for its youth, including, but certainly not limited to, soccer, baseball, basketball and football.
